Join Aprio’s National Tax Office as a Tax Associate, Professional Practice Group in its State and Local Tax Technical Services Practice, providing technical consultation and research on complex tax questions and issues to Aprio tax practitioners. Aprio Advisory Group, LLC, is a progressive and rapidly growing firm providing tax, accounting, assurance, and advisory services to a broad array of clients.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Tax Associate to join our Tax Controversy Department. This position is crucial in expanding Aprio’s National Tax Office to help our clients navigate complex state and local tax issues, developing tools for our tax practice to navigate the constantly changing state tax landscape, helping draft responses to state tax notices, and assisting Aprio tax professionals by researching and answering complex state tax questions. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of tax laws and regulations, and the ability to effectively communicate and negotiate with tax authorities.

Publishing technical guidance on emerging complex state tax developments and reference materials on topics that Aprio tax professionals see regularly in practice;

Documenting additional challenging taxation issues;

Assisting in designing disclosure templates for certain tax forms and templated responses to certain taxing authority inquiries;

Billable project work supporting Aprio tax partners in areas requiring special consulting and SALT National Tax Office support;

Performing research on both existing topics & new tax laws as well as regulations using the researched results to suggest and help shape content direction;

Utilizing artificial intelligence tools such as Claud to help drive and increase output;

Working on external, client-facing articles and other tax technical communications;

Identifying a career path as a subject matter expert in a defined section of the Internal Revenue Code;

Updating and maintaining Aprio’s Tax Technical Library to ensure all materials are relevant and current.

Qualification

Minimum of 2 years of experience in federal taxation compliance or training, including complex individual and business tax issues

Excellence in conducting in-depth tax research through electronic research tools

Proficiency with MS Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Word and Publisher.

Demonstrated experience in tax compliance and a technical/practical approach.

Solid knowledge of the federal and state income tax rules and an understanding of how the Code and regulations apply to tax advisors’ daily tasks is required. 

This role is ideal for a professional who enjoys tax technical research but does not require a client-facing role.

The position will also involve billable work on challenging tax work requiring technical and research expertise to assist tax partners in resolving potential problems and finding tax benefit opportunities for clients.

The ideal candidate will also need established excellent writing skills that can be adapted to different format requirements.

Curious and able to communicate state tax law concepts and issues.

Role involves managing multiple projects concurrently and producing high-quality deliverables on time while maintaining project documentation and course folders.

Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines while communicating regular updates to leadership is also necessary.
